President of New Zealand Chiropractic College Visits
Cleveland Campus
The advancing growth of chiropractic continues to be felt around the world,
a fact supported by the July 19 visit to Cleveland College of Chiropractic—Kansas
City by Dr. Brian Kelly, president of New Zealand Chiropractic College. Kelly
visited the campus to learn more about the educational philosophy and administrative
practices of the CCCKC.
CCCKC President Dr. Carl S. Cleveland, III, serves on the New Zealand college’s
board, shared information with Kelly followed by a tour of the campus. Throughout
the day Kelly was able to meet with administrators, clinic personnel and faculty
and staff members to gain information that may be beneficial to his institution.
Kelly’s trip is an integral part of his institution’s four-year-old
plan for growth called “Vision 2000.” In support of that theme,
he decided to pursue others who were considered visionaries in the field.
“New Zealand College of Chiropractic, now completing its first decade
of service, represents an emerging influence in chiropractic education, nestled
in the South Pacific and serving the Austral-Asian region of the globe,”
Cleveland said, sharing his enthusiasm about NZCC. “My visits to the college
have reminded me in many respects of the Cleveland campuses as they appeared
in the early 1960s. The college has my full support.”
Kelly’s goal is to use the knowledge gained during his trip to continue
the steady progress of his institution, while offering a solid alternative to
future students seeking their chiropractic education in Australia, where currently
20 percent of New Zealand’s chiropractors graduate. Kelly’s hope
is to stem the flow of students pursuing an education outside New Zealand, by
sharpening his focus and being proactive. He hopes the future will see all chiropractors
educated on his home soil.
The New Zealand college has graduated 116 chiropractors; Kelly believes there
is a bright future ahead for his college. Although much of the coursework is
similar to that in the states, the educational experience for students at New
Zealand Chiropractic College is slightly different from the one here. Their
students go through a five-year program, the first year of which is the pre-proportion.
The remaining four years are utilized exclusively for chiropractic study.
