ADHD To Alzheimer’s

By Robert De Maria, D.C.

Toxic living has created an epidemic of conditions that have appeared in our generation that do not respond to conventional care. The medical model has not been able to answer the question—why? Imagine you are the typical family member in America, dealing with a distraught child with poor attention, very active and doing poorly in school. Their parents have been given a choice—Ritalin or a special class. Thoughts in their mind of social exclusion, of being an outcast forever, and of being on medications race through their thought process. How can they handle it another day? Have you been around a child or young adult with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder? It is not a pleasant experience.

Let’s advance this scenario. You have an older family member that is appearing at functions with poor hygiene, clothes with old coffee stains and not kept properly. It can break your heart to see your mom, dad, aunt, uncle, grandmother or grandfather (soon yourself?) deteriorate to a point of being a child again, physically, emotionally and mentally. What is frightening about these statements is the truth. No person on the planet is guaranteed they will move on to the senior years with quality health unless they take appropriate steps in their developing and maturing years. Let me be candid with you in this example. If you are female or have female patients with menstrual issues; tender breasts, PMS, heavy bleeding, anxiety and other rather common symptoms prevalent today, you will have pre-menopausal symptoms that lead to menopause symptoms, including hot flashes, forgetfulness, compression fractures, reduced libido and emotional stress. Not an enjoyable picture. This scenario can be prevented if the right choices are presented and followed in the formative years.

Behavioral dysfunction of nearly all conditions seen in our practice today develop in utero. This is precipitated by a toxic environment with polluted air, water and chemical laced foods, resulting in congested livers and lymphatic systems and over-worked females of child bearing years who do not and cannot always prepare for pregnancy. We are creating a generation of unhealthy people because we live in an environment that does not promote health. We live in a hurry—eating sterile food, unhappy work and home environments, amused by the media trying to achieve a lifestyle portrayed by marketing and advertising that is distant and unattainable. You, as their drugless doctor, can create a mind shift that, once explained and understood by the patient, will be the lighthouse in your area promoting natural health. You will begin to attract patients who want to get on track with their health. I have observed, being in practice since 1978, that you will have a practice and clientele innately connected to your ability to help them.

Physiologically, the body is a simple machine that needs to be fed food of the highest quality, internally cleaned or in a state of good elimination, and connected with a properly functioning communication system.
The word “food” creates totally different images in a mind, depending on what pictures you started with as a child. What recipe box did you grow up with? In my upbringing in the 1950s meals in my home were prepared by my mother. We rarely ate out, only on very special occasions. The first golden arches arrived in the early 1960s. I maybe ate there once or twice in a year, usually just on a special occasion. It wasn’t the money; it was the ’60s mind set. Today, we are accustomed to “eating out.” Twenty five percent of all American children and young adults eat at a fast food restaurant daily. This creates the environment for behavioral failure. The most common food requested by children is chicken nuggets.

Emotional and behavioral dysfunction starts at the very beginning of life. It is not uncommon to see toddlers eating processed fast foods. What does this have to do with ADHD to Alziemers? Everything. I know from experience that the primary cause of behavioral dysfunction including depression, anxiety, ADHD and Alzhiemer’s is directly correlated with the improper metabolism of a brain fat called DHA. This fat is at the end process of the alpha-linolenic fat pathway or directly from a marine source. The primary, sabotaging cause of DHA breakdown not being properly produced in adequate quality and quantity is the consuming of trans fat or hydrogenated fat. Trans fat inhibits the chemical steps used by the body to create good brain fat. The half life of trans fat is 51 days. That means, it will take your body almost three months to process that bag of chicken nuggets or fries. Trans fat is abnormal to the body and alters the cell membrane, it creates cell mutilation. It is made by heating vegetable oil and adding hydrogen to it. Margarine is an example. There are necessary items required to allow the pathway to function at optimal levels. The staggering amount of that constituents the readability available to process include trans fat, sugar (depleting mineral and B vitamins), vitamin and mineral deficiencies, high insulin, enzyme deficiencies, food additives, including herbicides and pesticides.

You are what you consume. ADHD children will become ADHD adults, and as time continues ADHD adults will expodentially translate to Alzheimer seniors. Green vegetables, (which are not consumed in any measurable amount today) for example, mixed with adequate levels of zinc, magnesium, B vitamins, B6 and other nutrients create the fat used by our body to send life giving information. Regardless of who you are, this must occur to have DHA.

Fatty Acids
Briefly, there are two essential fatty acids in the body that I want to go into detail about. The term essential is used because you must consume them as precursor foods; your body cannot make essential fats from other constituents. The two essential fatty acids are from the different Omega groups. The omega position is determined by a bond position. Omega 6 fats also create prostaglandin 1 and 2, while the Omega 3 fat creates prostaglandin 3. Prostaglandins are fat tissue like horomones. They have several functions. Prostaglandin 1 and 3 take away pain, while prostaglandin 2 creates pain. The Omega 6 essential fat linoletic acid can also be modified to become arachidonic acid, a fat that can be sourced from meat, mollusk, milk and shell fish. Research from various sources suggests we should have an even consumption ratio of Omega 6 (prostaglandin 1 and 2) and Omega 3 (prostaglandin 3) precursor foods. In reality we consume much more Omega 6 foods, partly because of the over consumption of snacks and convenience items that are fried and baked in these oils. We also utilize high amounts of prostaglandin 2 based dairy products in the form of macaroni and cheese, pizza, yogurt, ice cream, cottage cheese, novelties, coffee cream and cheese in proportion to the prostaglandin 1 and 3 based items. In my practice, I encourage my patients to consume 1 tablespoon of flax oil, per one hundred pounds of body weight and to minimize and eliminate foods with trans fat or hydrogenated fat. Alpha-linolenitic acid, the other essential fat, is a part of the Omega 3 group. We, as a general statement, in our population do not consume enough green-based precursor food. This lack has resulted in an imbalance of too much Omega 6 end products. We have an Omega 3 deficiency syndrome occurring. Now, lets take it to a another level, Omega 3 fats based from green vegetables comprising alpha-linoletic acid, with the right constituents become EPA for cardiovascular health (deficiencies in them are the leading cause of death), along with DHA, for brain and emotional health and finally prostaglandin number 3 must be made in an adequate healthy quantity so the child does not stay at the ADHD level, proceeding to Adult ADHD. Unless people are in a position to change, the habits of 5 million ADHD or ADD-diagnosed or hyperactive children, they statistically sixty six percent of the time will become ADHD adults. Wrong health habits will create a set of symptoms and body signals at one stage of development in life, progressing as time goes on to another set of symptoms and body signals as time goes on. The cause, in the case of emotional behavioral health, must be addressed at some point or the scenario from childhood ADHD will proceed. The physiology must be changed; you cannot fool Mother Nature.

It is quite alarming to think the person in the car next to you could cause a motor vehicle accident because they are not functioning normally. It may have nothing to do “road conditions”, the reality is, ADHD is not a Ritalin, Adderall, Clonidine or Seterac deficiency, it is a physiological imbalance.

My clinical research also points to the role of spinal subluxation and its impact on behavioral dysfunction. The pilot program we completed strongly associated an altered cervical curve (Chapter 16 of Stop ADHD, ADD, ODD Hyperactivity, A Drugless Family Guide to Optimal Health) with body signals of ADHD. A normal cervical curve normally measures at the C2 and C7 posterior body is 45 degrees, the participants we followed in our program had a cervical lordotic curve of only 10 degrees.

The protocol we followed for our ADHD and other emotionally and neurologically impaired individuals is simple and non proprietary. I encourage ALL of my patients regardless of their condition, to minimize or eliminate sugar, dairy, and trans fat. I have them focus on whole food, a pure source of water, regular aerobic and strength training exercise. I suggest a supplement regime, whole food B vitamins, a complete whole food multiple and mineral, one tablespoon of high lignan quality organic flax oil per one hundred pounds, one capsule of salmon oil for 18 days, then salmon oil only on the days where the patient deviates from the standard prescribed diet. The supplements create an environment for the body to take the whole food you consume in your meals with the right mix of vitamins and minerals to make the very vital DHA necessary for proper brain function.

You can now relax, with a sense of relief, that you personally will grow to senior maturity with a happy healthy mental state. Now get ready for an increase of ADHD patients, young and older.
